I find that the best hidden safe to use for concealing your important items isn't one that rests at the rear of a painting. Those are so clich that they are almost never considered hidden because every single robber knows to look there initially.
When I was younger, my parents' home was robbed. My dad, being quite successful, was targeted by somebody that knew to check first behind the painting within my dad's den.
Though considered state-of-the-art, my dad's safe wasn't difficult enough to keep the thief from opening it along with taking over $100,000 in cash plus thousands worth of my mother's jewelry.
Today that I am more mature, I have made the decision that a regular hiding safe isn't for me. Apart from safety deposit boxes, I utilize diversion safes in my house. These kinds of safes are meant to appear to be ordinary things where thieves won't ever think of looking through to look for one's prized possessions.
There are some of these camouflaged safes inside my home in which I keep cash and jewelry. Many of them sit in plain sight however a filcher would never bother going through them, such as the Scotchguard diversion safe that sits on a shelf in my mudroom.

Traditional safes could be helpful but the reality that they are put in the most apparent hiding locations is disconcerting. The best hidden safe is the kind that looks so invaluable that it could not possible store valuables. I do think diversion safes are the perfect hiding spots even when positioned in plain view.
